About time, but I would rather not have Kohli get the captaincy.

We need the LOI batsman Kohli more than the LOI captain, and with his personality, we are asking for a burnout.

Because he has been resting for over a month. Sometimes you need some work to get fit. Otherwise, you will have injuries again. Bhuvi is useless in India because he cannot take wickets or bowl in the end overs. It is not because of the captain. He has added pace, but, he only gets in if he can bowl some yorkers now at the end. He cannot bat in ODIs either. The only place he is useful is in England. He should be in that team unless we get other players in top form.

I think Kohli will be fine with the captaincy. If his performance dips, we can always go to choice #3. But, right now, there is no choice #3 who is a certainty. Rohit? Rahane should be nowhere near the LOI team.

What I don't like about Dhoni nowadays is, during tight chases he eats up the balls till the last over looking for big hits and not trusting the. non-striker. If he succeeds it's ok, but if he gets out we lose.

Which is why the captain should not give him that opportunity. Bat him at #4, no lower. And, if he is still there until the end, he should be given orders to hit.

Here are the teams picked today:

ODI squad: KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (capt), MS Dhoni, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahane, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav

T20I squad: KL Rahul, Mandeep Singh, Virat Kohli (capt), MS Dhoni (wk), Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Manish Pandey, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashish Nehra

So two wicketkeepers in the T20I squad, suggesting one could play as a specialist batsman. Yuvraj has been picked because of his stellar Ranji season, but Nehra is a surprise choice (given how prone he is to injury).

It is unfortunate that retreads like Rahane, Bhuvi and Umesh keep getting into the ODI team despite having failed over many many matches, whereas people like Dhawal Kulkarni or Unadkat are not given a fair run despite doing well in the small number of matches they were given. The latter two would have been handy for the Champions Trophy in England. And Bhuvi needs not much more experience and could have been saved for England.

BTW, why does England get to host so many Champions Trophy? Is it because the only gaps in the calendar are in May-June-July?

I have nothing against Yuvraj, but, the choice is a step backward. I hope he is not played ahead of Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav at least in the first few ODIs. If it is swinging in England, and we need Bhuvi, Yuvraj certainly will not be able to handle it. In that case, maybe someone who is technically more sound like Rahane will be more useful even though Rahane does not know how to rotate the strike at will a la Kohli.

The dropping (or resting) of Shami is inexplicable, unless he is still injured.

He is still injured. Keeping England in mind we should have played another swing bowler to see if they can land their yorkers, etc. Kulkarni or Unadkat should have been tried. Unless, of course, we are planning to take Nehra to Champions Trophy!

Ok. Found out that Dhawal Kulkarni is also injured. We should have had Unadkat. We need a left-armer for the sake of variety. We need to groom one. Unadkat does not have speed, but, he can be useful in England. See Kumar & Kumar. Nehra is too fragile and old to rely on these days.

Today while playing from India A side, Rishabh Pant took 4 catches behind the wicket (all to medium pacers) and scored brisk inning of 59 runs in 36 balls (8x4s and 2x6s).

Also conceded no byes, with two good spinners (Shahbaz Nadeem and Parvez Rasool) operating. I think he is ready for the big time -- the new Dhoni.

Fabulous innings from Kedar Jadhav today to rescue India from 63/4. Kohli played yet another incredible innings, but Jadhav was a revelation.

Jadeja remains brainless as a batsman. Amazing just how ridiculous his international batting is after all these years. With 33 runs needed off 35 balls, Jadeja plays an asinine shot to be caught at midwicket, letting England back into the match.
