Dhoni could not do either is expected over the last few years.

We are going to continue struggling in this format of the game until Dhoni retires.

The trouble with Dhoni's batting approach in ODIs is that he starts too slowly, sure he can handle the extra pressure at the end. When he gets out early (with a poor strike-rate) as he often does now, it puts unnecessary pressure on the remaining batsmen. Pandya put up a heroic effort under the circumstances with #10 Umesh Yadav, but it wasn't enough.

While he is sure in his mind, in reality, he cannot. Often in recent times, he has failed to finish. He should not bat anywhere except the top 4. If you are talking about slow batting, Rohit and Rahane are guilty of the same. Rahane throughout his career.

But, yesterday, Dhoni contributed more than the top 4. Yesterday's failure was mainly due to the top 4.

Rohit and Kohli are not going to win us every match. Dhoni has had dozens of failures, including yesterday, in recent years.

That is true. But, so has Rahane. Dhoni at least used to know how to bat in ODIs --- don't know if it will come back; possibly not. Rahane has never shown beyond a match here or a series there on flat wickets that he can bat in ODIs.

Rahane does have a mediocre record in ODIs (batting average of 33 at a strike rate of less than 80), but stays in the side because he is supposed to prove solidity around the temperamental/mercurial batsmen around him. When Dhawan/Rahul are available, Rahane should be the first one to make way.

Dhoni, though, cannot escape blame for not doing the main thing he was renowned for -- finishing. He has failed more often than not in that role in recent times.

We have 2 good ODI batsman at the moment, and possibly a 3rd in domestic conditions in Raina.

We need Rahul and Pandey to kick off and cement a place as regulars and soon.

I agree that Dhoni is past his time. I have said that he can only play in the top 4. Who would keep wickets if he retires?

We have one superstar in ODIs: Kohli. Then I would rate Dhawan and Rohit. Dhawan is fine in Indian conditions and batting wickets abroad too. He has performed better than Rohit. But, I suspect Rohit will get retained if we need to make space for Rahul and don't want to move Kohli from #3. Rahul is a superb talent and should be given chances to figure things out. I think maybe we can try Rohit, Dhawan, Rahul, Kohli, Manish, Jadhav. If Rahul can keep well or improve on his keeping consistently, this could work.

Like I said, Dhoni should only play in the top 4. He played a good innings today.

Good innings from his certainly, first 50 in more than a year.

It is fine to give Dhoni more time if he wants to reinvent himself as the #4 but he is long finished at the #6 or #7.

Typical great chase from Virat. Needs to dominate and win India an ODI WC and he will have a great shout at being the ODI GOAT.

"I have batted lower down for a long time, I think 200 innings down the order. To some extent I am losing an ability to freely rotate in the middle, so I have decided to bat up and let the others finish."

Good decision which gives him the opportunity to extend his career for another 2-3 years.

Yes, good decision to bat at #4, especially given the inexperience in the middle order. Manish provided good support to Kohli in the crucial final partnership as well. As long as Kohli is himself, India will rarely lose. What a masterclass from him yesterday!!

Great knock by Kohli supported by Dhoni and Manish.
We are getting too dependent on Kohli or Rohit to win us ODI's these days.
Need Rahane/Manish/Kedar etc. to win us games just in case the other 2 fail..
