Well given that the teams are going to get reset next year, short-termism is what the doctor ordered.

The prices paid for Rashid Khan (Afghanistan) and Mohammed Siraj (Hyderabad) suggest less short-termism. I didn't know that the players will all be reshuffled next year (is that true?).

For some foreign players, it could also be their (non)availability for the entire duration.

What do you mean by "is that true"?

Now, Vijay will have surgery in his hand and rehabilitate his shoulder. Given his poor performance in the Aussie series, it was almost evident that something was wrong with him.

Jadeja and Umesh have niggles that they have to rest for two weeks.

It is remarkable that the team fought tooth and nail to the end with so many injuries some of them serious. Vijay, Rahul, Ashwin, Jadeja, Umesh, Kohli. The openers, the main MO bat, the main fast bowler and the two spinners. That is the backbone of the team.

Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya are fit for tamasha cricket.

Hardik should be considered for test cricket in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia. In these countries India will play only 1 spinner, Jadeja or Ashwin. So Hardik can bat at no. 6 and be the 4th seamer. With this India would have 5 bowlers and bad deep till no. 8.

Hardik Pandya is not good enough to be a Test number 6.
Ashwin, Jadeja, Saha all have much better batting records.
Hardik is ok for T20, IPL and maybe ODI's.
Don't think he has the technique or a good first class record to push him to 6.
Surprised to see that he doesn't even have a century in any form of the game so far....

Hardik averages 27 in FC games in India with the bat. From the little I have seen, he does not have the technique to bat against the short ball or the seaming ball. He should be nowhere near the test team. Our three pacers while visiting England next should be Bhuvi, Shami, and Umesh. Bhuvi should be told to work hard on his batting. In England, unless it is a batting pitch and sunny conditions in the latter part of the summer, we should play six batsmen. One of Ashwin/Jadeja will play.

In the Champions Trophy, Hardik should be the #3 bowler and first choice all-rounder. I would take Stuart Binny as the backup. The first-choice bowlers should be Shami and Bumrah. I would prefer the swing of Dhawal Kulkarni as the backup.

Pune got thrashed by Delhi yesterday, with Sanju Sansom notching up his maiden century. Steve Smith didn't play, but there were some other bizarre selections by Pune -- including dropping Manoj Tiwary immediately after he'd made 40* off 23 balls in the previous match.

Sorry to say this, but, Dhoni cannot hit. He should play strictly in the top 4 in ODIs. He should not be seen as a closer anymore.

We do need a big hitter down. So, even though this is small sample size, I tried to find the ones with the best strike rates. As always to keep out some random bowler who came and tanked five balls out of the park, let us say that the minimum number of runs made needed ~64 (one run reduced to keep H Pandya in). Here are the ones with the best strike rates (in order).

Hardik Pandya, G Maxwell, C Lynn, KM Jadhav, MK Pandey, DA Warner, JC Buttler, G Gambhir, SV Sampson.

Pandya and Jadhav seem to be our hitters suitable for the #7 and #6 slots in the Champions Trophy. Maybe Pandey at #5.

Interestingly, between the two keeper-bats, ex-India player Sampson has relinquished the gloves to Pant. Is this because Pant is the better keeper? Or is it because some selector leaned on the team and said the Pant is the next chosen one?

OK, I missed that sad news. Yesterday was my dad's 84th birthday, Ramanathan Krishnan's 80th birthday, and today is the 100th birth anniversary of the great Vinoo Mankad. Sad that Manoj lost his father yesterday: if I remember correctly, Tiwary senior was a "thelawalla" at Howrah station; remarkable that Manoj rose to such cricketing heights from such humble beginnings.

The young Afghan leggie Rashid Khan continues to impress. Bhajji though was key to MI restricting Hyderabad (with Bumrah tightening the screws later), thus cantering to an easy win after Parthiv's racy start.

Rohit Sharma bowled first ball by a Badree googly, just as Rashid Khan got him the other day. Rohit has had a miserable IPL so far (2, 3, 4, 0).

Kohli comes back today with a terrific 62 that could be match winning.
