Asian tour goes to Macau Open this week and many Indians in the field. Not a bad day for Indians.

The top Indian golfer Arjun Atwal is looking to consolidate his position for Asian year end Order of Merit. Since, most of the time he is palying in European tour, he has few opportunities on APGA and he should make use of them. Arjun Atwal started well in his first round with two birdies in first two holes (-2), dropping a stroke on 3rd (-1) and getting another birdie on 4th (-2). But then disaster struck as he had a triple bogie on 5th (+1)followed by another bogie on 6th (+2) and in two holes his scored changed from promising -2 to +2. He steadied himself and started rescue operations but managed a birdie on 9th (+1). Next 7 holes he played at par, but finally he salvaged his round with two more birdies on 17th and 18th to finish at -1. He is placed 17 on the leaderboard. The leader is Adam Fraser with -8 followed by European great Colin MONTGOMERIE (-5) tied at 2nd spot with three more players.

Some other Indians also did well. The top 70 and tied will make the cut. The last five Indian players need a good show to make the cut. Following is the performance of all Indians.

17 Arjun SINGH -1
17 Arjun ATWAL -1
30 Gaurav GHEI E
47 Mukesh KUMAR +1
62 Harmeet KAHLON +2
77 Amandeep JOHL +3
77 Amritinder SINGH +3
90 Vivek BHANDARI +4
90 Digvijay SINGH +4
114 Firoz ALI +8

I'll complete the results. Good to see Gaurav Ghei back. Remember that he is the first ever Indian who participated in a major when he qualified for British open (I don't remember the year). I remember this as I got interested in Golf around that time.
Atwal is moving up steadily and he is in the top 10.
5 players move to the money round over the weekend.

10 Arjun ATWAL SINGH (-3) 70,69
13 Gaurav GHEI (-2) 71,69
38 Arjun SINGH (+1) 70,73
50 Vivek BHANDARI (+2) 75,69
50 Amritinder SINGH (+2) 74,70
--------- CUT (+3) -------
80 Mukesh KUMAR (+5) 72,75
92 Harmeet KAHLON (+7) 73. 76
92 Amandeep JOHL (+7) 74,75

Macau Open Oct 16 - 19, 2003
India's Arjun Atwal, the current leader of the Asian PGA Tour Order of Merit, shot a 69 and is three under for the tournament.

“I played a little better than yesterday. My wrist felt a lot better today. I hurt it practicing in Orlando about six weeks ago and it hasn't been good. I have been playing every week since then. I have been playing on painkillers every single day for the last five weeks. Yesterday it was a little sore and today I have got it taped up for the first time," said Atwal, won this year's Carlsberg Malaysian Open.

5 Arjun ATWAL SINGH (-6) 70,69,68
39 Gaurav GHEI (+3) 71,69,76
43 Amritinder SINGH (+4) 74,70,73
51 Arjun SINGH (+5) 70,73,75

Most of the Indians shot over par today except for Arjun who has now moved into the top 5 in the tournament with a 3 under par round of 68. Gaurav Ghei who was also doing well until today had a poor round of 5 over par taking his back to the +3 for the tourney and 39th position overall.

Arjun Atwal is doing great specially considering that he is playing with an injury. Note that the 3rd day performance had one triple bogie. But he recovered well. Following is the quaote from APGA site.

Atwal, the current leader of the Asian PGA Tour Order of Merit title, carded a 68. He triple bogeyed the 10th but then rallied with six birdies in the next eight holes.

"I turned it around completely. I wasn't hitting it bad so I just figured one bad swing was not going to ruin it all," said Atwal.

The Indian has been struggling with a wrist injury but was helped by strapping it up.

"The wrist is perfect, no problem. I have strapped it and that has helped. Funnily enough, this is the first time I have strapped it since the Indian Open in 1999, and I won that tournament," added the Indian.

Arjun Atwal finishes 3rd in Macau Open.

Last day he shot a round of 3 under par 68 to take the sole 3rd spot.

Overall good performance by Arjun Atwal :) , but still there is little disappointment as he was quite close to winning it. He started the final day 5 behind the surprise leader Scott Barr and two behind European great Colin MONTGOMERIE. The start was great as he scored 4 birdies halfway through, with birdies coming on 2nd, 4th, 8th and 9th hole. In fact at this time he was joint leader as Scott fell back with a birdie. At this time Arjun just needed to carry on the momentum to win the tournament, but alas!, that was not to be as he bogied the 11th hole and did not get any more birdies. Colin, who was behind Arjun for majot part of the day, went ahead and tied with Scott at the end by birding the last hole. In a playoff Colin beat Scott to win the tournament.

Arjun gets $15,500 for 3rd spot and thus consolidates his position as a leader in the moneylist. He is currently sitting at $233,743 from 5 tournaments, while ZHANG Lian-Wei at 2nd position is on $155,569. Last year he lost the order of merit to Jyoti Randhawa, but this time he is determined to win it. This is another race that would be interesting as the year winds down.

The top 5 in the race are the following:

1 Arjun ATWAL (IND) 233,743.58 5
2 ZHANG Lian-Wei (CHN) 155,569.58 4
3 Thongchai JAIDEE (THA) 138,786.69 8
4 Brad KENNEDY (AUS) 121,808.50 9
5 CHUNG Joon (KOR) 104,019.18 9

Hero Honda Masters

Postby ajay » Tue Nov 04, 2003 7:56 pm

Asian PGA moves to New Delhi this week.
This tournament gives a chance for local players to earn their playing rights by winning the event as Harmeet Khalon did it last year. In past Indian players have normally dominated this event and hopefully that domination will continue.
I'm sure most of the Indian Stars will be participating here. In past Daniel Chopra has also participated here (after all Delhi is his home turf). He played quiet well last year and he was also leading at some stage on the final day before Harmeet triumped. I don't know whether Daniel is ready to play so soon after the last weekend setback. The faster he recovers better it would be for him.

Past winners of Hero Honda are:

1997: Ted Purdy (USA) 277 (11-under) (he just finished in top 20 in NW tour)
1998: Jyoti Randhawa (IND) 275 (13-under)
1999: Jyoti Randhawa (IND) 277 (11-under)
2000: Arjun Atwal (IND) 270 (18-under)
2002: Harmeet Kahlon (IND) 277 (7-under)

The moneylist for APGA after Hero Honda Masters:

1 Arjun ATWAL (IND) 282,193.58
13 Daniel CHOPRA (SWE) 69,793.45
14 Amandeep JOHL (IND) 68,330.80
17 Arjun SINGH (IND) 60,727.95
20 Jyoti RANDHAWA (IND) 47,613.89
60 Harmeet KAHLON (IND) 20,839.63
75 Digvijay SINGH (IND) 12,573.07
78 Gaurav GHEI (IND) 12,095.00
86 Jeev Milkha SINGH (IND) 8,985.00
87 Mukesh KUMAR (IND) 8,932.00
92 Amritinder SINGH (IND) 7,947.50
93 Firoz ALI (IND) 7,817.50
105 Uttam Singh MUNDY (IND) 6,405.80
128 Vijay KUMAR (IND) 3,675.00
129 Zai KIPGEN (IND) 3,195.00
154 Vivek BHANDARI (IND) 1,075.00

If I'm not mistaken, only top 60 retain their APGA card. Harmeet Khalon is on the bubble. He need to improve his ranking in the season ending tournaments. Unfortunately, Digvijay Singh missed an opportunity to secure his card on the last day of Hero Honda.
