Ryder Cup 2006, The K Club, Ireland (USA or Europe???)

Postby Kumar » Thu Sep 16, 2004 5:32 am

Ryder Cup!!! One of the biggest team event in sports of golf !!!

Nobody can forget the 45 foot putt that Justin Leonard made and the resultant celeberation by the American team, while the Jose Olazabal was waiting to make his putt in 1999!!!

To those who are uninitiated into the world of ryder cup, the format is as follows, (Golf experts correct me if I am wrong)...

Friday (not sure of the order)

1) Four balls - 4 matches
Best Player among the four wins the hole (two players from each team)
2) Foursomes - 4 matches
Two players form each team with just one ball.. Each players plays alternate strokes

Saturday
3) Four balls - 4 matches
4) Foursomes - 4 matches

Sunday
12 singles match

There is 28 points at stake with 1/2 point for Tie and Europe will retain the cup if they score 14 points, while US has to score 14.5 to wrest the cup from Europe.

Now my prediction is Europe winning 14.5 to 13.5 and wresting the cup!!!

At home, the US should be unassailable. Too much firepower there.

Ryder Cup USA or Europe???

Postby BSharma » Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:17 am

Being an American, my vote is for USA!!!

The US team has better ranked golfers but the Ryder Cup format is different from the usual PGA tournaments. The egos of the American players have come in the past to let the European team to win some matches recently.

There will be four matches on Friday and the US usually does poorly on the first day. US will be lucky to end the day with a 2-2 tie.

Friday four ball:
Woods and Mickelson versus Montgomerie and Harrington
Love and Campbell versus Clarke and Jimenez
Riley and Cink versus McGinley and Donald
Toms and Furyk versus Garcia and Westwood

What a star power for the first game!!! I am not sure I agree with Woods/ Mickelson Pairing for the Fourball!!! Their strategy probably is to have Woods can go for distance while Mickelson go for accuracy!!!

I am not so fearless, that I would predict a defeat for Woods/phil... But I am guessing a very close match.. Anyway I expect the game to be tied 2-2 at the end of Friday's Fourball..

Star power or not, the US team does not do well in the four ball competition on the first day. The Europeans are leading the Americans in all four matches with the half-way mark approaching. :(

Ryder Cup - first day

Postby BSharma » Sat Sep 18, 2004 1:31 am

"Europe wallops USA" screams the headlines at the PGA web site. When the score is 6.5 to 1.5 in favor of Europe, the headline is appropriate. Europe needs 7.5 more points to retain the Ryder Cup.

Chris DiMarco and Jay Haas were the only winners for USA today.

:goodluck: USA.

Americans off to flying start with a lead in the first two matches..

Letz see if they can stay that way!!! They have got a good chance to go win atleast 3 games in the morning!!! and may be even score 6 points today...

US can win the Cup if they restrict Europeans to around 10 points at the end of today (especially with their single prowess)

As I had mentioned earlier US is slowly consolidating on its fast start..
Right now they have two stroke lead in two matches and one match All Square and One match Europe UP. Europe would be happy to get 1.5 points, but my guess is US may easily get up to 3 points and may be even more..

Do you think we will See Daniel in the next Ryder Cup?

Daniel can not be in Ryder Cup, same way as Vjay Singh or Ernie Els can't play Ryder Cup.

Oh! I'm sorry! Actually, he can be in Ryder cup as he can represent Europe. But, probably, he'll need to play European tour for that. I'm not sure about that

Ryder Cup USA or Europe???

Postby BSharma » Sun Sep 19, 2004 2:11 am

The Americans have dug a big hole for themselves and it will take a greater effort to pull this one out. Five years back the US team was lagging behind 6-10 before staging the biggest come back victory in Ryder Cup history. Today the Europeans have an 11-5 lead and look all set to win the Ryder Cup.

Waiting for a miracle on the green!

I am sure Daniel can play in Ryder cup if he finishes in the top 10 for the europeans!! Question is can he do it?

Anyway, I think US are in with a chance to win 9 of the first 10 matches and it may come down to the last game Cink and Mcginley!!!!

Tiger has won the first hole!!!!

Bernard has predicted that Europe will win 2 of the first three games!!! Bold prediction!!! Not sure it will happen

The head-to-head competition occurs on the last day and the US team usually has better singles golfers than the Europeans. The US team will win most of the matches today but the Europeans have built up a sizeable lead and it will be very dificult for the Americans to ocercome.

Go USA!!!
