Gaurav Ghei (at UBS Japan Golf Tour Championship)

Postby ajay » Mon May 21, 2007 4:17 pm

Gaurav Ghei has been doing very well since last year. Right now he is playing best golf of his life and that has propelled him to World ranking of 132. He has placed himself as one of the top Indian golf player as only handful of Indians have done better. His current ranking is better than the best ever ranking of Shiv Kapur(Current WGR 199, Best WGR 134) and just outside Daniel (CWGR 127, BWGR 121) and Arun Atwal's (CWGR 407, BWGR 127) best. He definitely deserves a thread on his own. Check out his biography at
Asian Tour site. Some details follows here:

Gaurav Ghei put his name in the the Indian golf history firmly when he became first Indian player to qualify for the British Open in 1997 after shooting a two-day score of 135 to finish second in his qualifying venue and earn a place in the starting line-up at Royal Troon. His first international victory came in the inaugural year of Asian tour in 1995, when he dramatically won Gadgil Western Masters by chipping for an eagle on the final hole. He had 5 top 10s in 1995 and finished 5th in the 1995 order of merit list. In 1996 Gaurav Ghei beat Colin Montgomerie in the Alfred Dunhill Cup at St Andrews as India stunned Scotland at the home of golf. Colin was playing at his peak in those days and he was one of the top players at that time. But after 1997 his graph went down as he struggled with bad form and injuries. He will have occasional good tournament but not at par with the early promise that he showed. At the same time Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa and Arjun Atwal also started making their presence known and became the star players of Asia. Gaurav Ghei was more or less forgotten name on the sidelines.

His resurgence started in 2006 as he ended 11-year victory drought at the 2006 Mercuries Taiwan Masters. He also posted three more top 10s in 2006. In 2007 he has already one victory under his belt when he triumphed at 2007 Pine Valley Beijing Open. He missed having a back to back victory this week as he fell short by one stroke to get into the playoff group at Macau Open thus finishing 3rd. His world ranking has been steadily rising over this period as he reaches WGR 132 this week.

Gaurav has been moving steadily up the rankings.  :notworthy:
If he keeps his form going, we will have another Indian in top 100.
Keep it up GG... This week GG has another great opportunity playing in Korea.

Gaurav is again off to a wonderful start -5 and tied 6th after 1st round of SK Telecom Open... :notworthy:

Gaurav is recieved a special invitation from Japanese tour for playing consistently well (in 2007) on Asian tour, so he will be taking part in 'UBS Japan Golf Tour Championship, Shishido Hills' from June 28th to July 1, 2007.

Good luck Gaurav.

At UBS Japan Golf Tour Championship ShishidoHills 2007 - First Round

T98 Gaurav GHEI 75 +5

Today Gaurav had tough time in adjusting on tough and tricky Shishido Hills Country Club course ... He had very entertaining round which had 3 birdies, 6 bogeys and a double bogey ... So tomorrow he needs atleast 3/4 under round to making cut ... But anyway playing on this tough course help him to improve.

At UBS Japan Golf Tour Championship ShishidoHills 2007 - Second Round

T109 Gaurav GHEI 75 77 + 12

Gaurav missed cut by long way (+ 6) ... But still playing on different course, surroundings and weather definetly help him to become solid player in the future.
