She is playing college tennis for Columbia, and she led her team to another title of some sort last week.

Just to clarify one small point on the :Offtopic: discussion: here is the official dictionary definition of carpetbagger:

1. A Northerner who went to the South after the Civil War for political or financial advantage.
2. An outsider, especially a politician, who presumptuously seeks a position or success in a new locality.

I think definition 2 applies fully to Sonia. Her professions of being a reluctant politician are nonsense -- actually, quite a good tactic in India, where self-abnegation raises one's standing in society. She was a very active politician from the moment Narasimha Rao became PM. I will hand it to her for learning Hindi (albeit not well enough to speak it without notes), and getting tutored in politics by Pranab and others over time. However, the methods she has used to remain in power (starting with her tactics to stay in 10 Janpath, one of the best locations in New Delhi) are ruthless. On the appointments of the first president, CEC, CVC, etc., it would be interesting to know what the responses are. (Even without the RBI strictures, Pratibha Patil was the least qualified of our presidents). And I haven't even begun down the road on Robert Vadra (not just the money he has made illegally, but the mysterious deaths of all Indian members of his immediate family), and other matters...

On Jean Dreze, I think he is definitely a politician in India -- and he did seek a position in this new locality (away from Belgium, his home country) as a member of the National Advisory Council, the quasi-constitutional body headed by Sonia that effectively runs the current government. That he even changed his citizenship to do this increases the aptness of definition 2. mehtakrishna, thanks for your kind remarks about my tennis-related posts, and also for mentioning the touching experiences you had with Dreze as a person. I'm sure his intentions are good, and he is well-meaning in his personal predilections. But his actions and policies have destroyed India's economy and brought it perilously close to another balance of payments crisis (and in fact, caused two currency crises in just the past 26 months, in July 2011 and in May-Aug 2013).

By the definition "carpetbagger", anybody who left India for financial advantage and success in a new locality would fall into that category, including PKB

Common usage of carpetbagger has always been someone who deliberately moves to a new constituency or location in order to get that "presumptuous advantage". Sonia moved because she married an Indian dude. What came decades later does not make her a carpetbagger.

Cars, pets, bags... She married Sanjay (EDIT oops, Rajeev) for all those things too.
Isn't she a "car-pet-bag-er" then? :)

:Offtopic: Everybody wants to link her to Sanjay. Someone called Sanjay her son, and now Jay has made Sanjay her husband. Poor Rajiv is left out in the cold... :-)

Kanika has qualified for the ITA national championships next week, by winning the North-east singles championship:

She was Northeast runner-up in doubles, but will probably still get to play in the doubles championship as well with a host wildcard.

So, Kanika is beginning to have good success in her somophore year. In the meantime, both Ratnika Batra & Rutuja Bhosale lost in Round of 32 of Texas regionals.

The results of that are in the link below -

Texas regionals

Both are still in their first year & seem to be still finding their feet in college tennis circuit.

Kanika is the hardest hitter of the tennis ball among current Indian players. She has the biggest serve. Her first serve is a little terror. She can win these 10K futures & 25K ITF challengers right now where a bunch of other indian women are struggling. waiting for her return.

Kanika lost in R1 of singles and doubles at the 32-draw USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. In doubles, the loss was close (6-8), but less so in singles (26 36).
However, in the consolation draw (for R1 losers), she won a round each in singles and doubles. So she is effectively in the top-24 in both singles and doubles (at least as far as this national tournament is concerned) -- pretty good for a sophomore.
