Re: Ankita Raina thread

Let's us hope so. But, she has been at this 200-300 level for 4 years now. So, she does seem to have been stuck at this level.

It is not a bad level to get stuck at though for an Indian women tennis player considering the paucity of players of this level that we have had.

4-3 Ankita serves. ... 15-15, 15-30, 15-40 (Ankita in a spot of bother), 30-40, broken :-(
4-4 Guo serves. 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 40-15, 40-30 (3h mark crossed), Ankita breaks!! woohoo
5-4 Ankita serves for the match. 15-0, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 40-30, Deuce, A-40, Deuce, 40-A, Deuce, A-40, (MP2 saved) Deuce, 40-A, Broken :-(

Update: Ankita wins!

[R1] RAINA, Ankita (IND,289) d GUO, Hanyu (CHN,355) 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 (Match duration: 3h 27m)

She will probably meet the top-seed, who is currently ranked 100, in the second round.

Wow, 3 hours 27 mins is really a marathon match .Glad that Ankita came thru this in the end after missing some matchpoints earlier.

At $60K ITF Women challenger, Quanzhou , China

[R2] RAINA, Ankita (IND,289) vs. (1) Saisai ZHENG (CHN,100)

This is a real tough one for Ankita anyway but will be even tougher considering her today's long match.

And that was actually Ankita's first win of the year after 5 losses earlier ( 3 in fed cup and 2 in China challenger qualies).

She tweeted -

That moment when you've finally won the first match of the year in a 3 and a 1/2 hour battle!

Agree, not a great win by ranking-wise but terrific hard fought win after losing the first set.

Good win by Ankita beating a tough Chinese player in China. Now, she needs to repeat against an even tougher opponent.

Ankita won only around 52-53% of points on her own serve in the third set even though she got a high percentage of first serves in -- that was a serious problem. She won because her opponent did worse. Looks like Ankita needs to work on her serve as she is not getting any advantage from her current serve. That might be the reason she is stuck in the rankings. Just adding some wrinkles might help her if she can't improve on pace.

I have seen Ankita play. Her ground strokes is the best among indians and worth the praise. Her height is the main problem. Because of that her serve has no teeth. She seems quite fit. So no issues on that.

Top seed proved too strong for Ankita.

At $60K ITF Women challenger, Quanzhou , China

[R2] RAINA, Ankita (IND,289) l. (1) Saisai ZHENG (CHN,100) 36 26

Ankita is playing in a 50K challenger in Turkey this week.

At $60K ITF Women, Istnabul, Turkey

[R1] Ankita RAINA (IND,286) vs. Polina MONOVA (RUS,223)

Monova seems to be in great form in last few months ever since she reached the final at Pune challenger in November. After that she won a couple of titles and reached the SF of a 25K in Istanbul last week. But, Ankita has won all 3 matches in their head to head meetings including the one last year at the same place. So, it is likely to be a close match with Monova being slight favourite based on her recent form.

I did not expect such a one sided loss.

Ankita really needs to play some lower level tournaments to regain some momentum and form.

I totally agree with you Sameer. She needs to get a few wins under her belt for the year.

she is into that zone where her ranking is in semblance to her current abilities and if she doesn't bring big changes to her game things won't change much for her.
