A former top 150 player, Atilla Balazs, is going to play at Balatonboglar next week. Hope he is on the other half of the draw.

Not sure I understand the comparison above. Qualifying into a GS is probably close to or equal to winning a challenger. Somdev qualified in the French Open (which is a clay GS in which all the top clay courters play) twice and got to Q3 once and also won a main draw round once. Don't recall Karan or RamK playing at anywhere near that level on European clay. If you mean that they played more futures and won a occasional round at the challenger level on European clay than the statement above makes some sense.

I think Sumit has a great chance of making the AO Qualies, if his choice of tournaments is wise. He'll be a real force at the French Open qualies though!

Sumit has only 10 points to defend in Jan-April next year. So, even if he does not make it to AO qualies cut, he has a great chance to make the cut for French open next year.

What I meant to say Som never took to clay as his favourite surface. He preferred hard courts though he had excellent results every time he played. Karan was the first Indian who played more often on clay and had some good results and RamK and Sumit followed.

I don't complain for Som's neglect of clay courts as he did well on hard courts.

Sumit's match (against a 16 year old WC) started off poorly with Sumit being broken in the 4th game to go 1-3 down. But he has managed to get the break back and is serving at 2-3. I hope he wins in straight sets.

0-1 Piros holds to love
1-1 Sumit holds
1-2 Piros holds
1-3 Piros breaks Sumit
2-3 Sumit breaks back
2-4 Piros breaks Sumit
2-5 Piros holds; Sumit serves to stay in the set.
2-6 Sumit can't hold his serve and is broken at 15. :-(

Sumit Nagal vs Z, Piros 2-6

Sumit in trouble as he has held serve only once in the first set.

Phew, what an escape. He is a fighter for sure although he should not have made it that hard for himself. However, just looked at the other guys's record and he has played only 4 tournaments in pros and has fought well a few times against much higher ranked player. He is also ranked 82 in juniors and had a few deep runs at higher level junior tournaments. So, his rankings of 1366 is a misnomer and it was not as gimme match as it looked.

Next,

ITF $25K Hungary F8 Futures (Clay)

[R2] (4) Sumit NAGAL (IND,372) vs. (Q) David GORSIC (SLO,NR)

The next match should be a lot easier. He needs to minimise his court time in the early rounds to stay fresh for the upcoming matches in this tournament, as well as for the rest of the season.

Players like Piros are tricky. He has his basics in place.

This match reminded me of his first round match at Poland futures where he had similar escape against lowly ranked player. After that he did not look back and went on to win the title. Hope that repeats here. :D

I am surprised that no one has posted about today's victory.
Sumit breeze past qualifier with double bagel in R2.
