Two very nice wins for KU Singh this week, and a lucky break (which he surely deserves after all the knocks he has taken in the past year).

This guy is sort of bizarre. He seems to hibernate and from time to time erupt.

Another bizarre point is that he is most of the time if not all he is playing in S.E. Asia only, plus his Uncle lives here in HongKong

KU lost in a close SF.

At $15K Indonesia F1 Futures, Jakarta

[SF] Karunuday SINGH (IND,1256) l. Fajing SUN (CHN,608) 63 57 57

It was a very close match where KU won 109 against 111 by his opponent.

He is thru to the doubles final there.

Karunuday has been a pretty decent player in the past (with a career-high of 393 in April 2014) -- much better than what he has done in the past year (until this current decent week in a $15K Futures in Indonesia). The dip in performances seem to be because of an injury, which helps explain the return to a better performance this week. More generally, he tried to use his PR to play a bunch of Challengers last year, which wasn't such a clever idea since he had never really made a breakthrough into the Challenger level before the injury -- although he had done well at the Futures level.

In 2014, he beat Ti Chen (QF) and Shuichi Sekiguchi (in the final) in March to win the Manila Futures (both were in the top-300 at the time), and made the final of the Phnom Penh Futures in November. He won the Mandya (India) Futures in May 2015, soon after making the final of the Bangkok Futures -- and winning one round (d. Spain's David Perez Sanz, ranked in the top-300) at the An-ning Challenger. In March 2015, he made the final of the Chandigarh Futures, beating good players like Ti Chen and Riccardo Ghedin on the way. He made his career high soon after the Manila title, but also built up to it with two finals in Futures in Thailand (beating Mate Pavic and Yasutaka Uchiyama, both top 300, in one and Saketh Myneni, Adam Feeney and Takuto Niki in another), four SFs and four QF in Futures in Asia. He has not really got anywhere near those levels in the past year. Perhaps this week is the start of a turnaround, despite the close loss in the singles SF.

Yes, he has been troubled by injuries since last couple of years. Before that he seemed headed to be at least a challenger level player.Hope he is getting back to full fitness now.

He gave a walkover in doubles final. I guess would have flown back to India for Chandigarh futures.

Karunuday is using his protected ranking of 471 to play a $15K Futures in Jakarta this coming week. That explains his absence from this week's India F6. Once his points from the Bangalore SF are entered (on Monday) I don't think he'll need to use his PR for $15K Futures.

His career-high is 393, but KU is now ranked 1039. Ironically he could have got into the Indonesia F4 next week too without using his PR: the last acceptance into the main draw is #1077.

KU had another straight sets win.

At $15K Indonesia F4 Futures , Jakarta

[R2] Karunuday SINGH (IND,1039) d. Jake DELANEY (AUS,845) 64 75

Draw has opened up nicely for KU with a Taiwanese qualifier upsetting the second seeded Aussie. Hope he takes advantage.

[QF] Karunuday SINGH (IND,1039) vs. (Q) Yu Hsiang CHIU (TPE,1425)

Good job by Karunuday, who seems to thrive in Southeast Asia.

It has been a while since KU has decent results anywhere. It appears that it took him a while to get over his injury. Hopefully, he will go deeper this time around and get his ranking into the three digit level. He must win the QF.

KU lost in QF. :-(

At $15K Indonesia F4 Futures , Jakarta

[QF] Karunuday SINGH (IND,1039) l. (Q) Yu Hsiang CHIU (TPE,1425) 36 63 36

The Taiwawse guy seems to be in hot form having beaten the second seeded Aussie in the earlier round but KU should still have win this match.

KU with his partner has reached the double final though.

This week KU got unlucky with the draw -

[R1] Karunuday SINGH (IND,890) l. (2) Brydan KLEIN (GBR,247) 67(3) 36

Another Indian player Haadin Bava had a 3 set win over Korean qualifier in first round but will run in to Klein in second round.

At $15K Indonesia F6 Futures, Jakarta

[R1] Karunuday SINGH (IND, 1039) d (Q) Dong-Kyu LEE (KOR, 1303) 3-6 6-4 6-3
[R1] (Q) Sam MATHESON(NZL, 1499) l Haadin BAVA (IND, 859) 3-6 6-1 6-1

Potentially, KU plays second seed Ti Chen and Haadin plays sixth seed Kento Takeuchi in R2. So I expect an early end to this week in Indonesia. KU and Haadin are playing doubles and their first round match is scheduled for later today.
