Mahesh Bhupathi thread...

Postby nkoth » Tue Mar 11, 2003 3:40 am

How can we not have a Bhupathi thread going?  :)

Anyway, a good start with Henman at the Indian Wells R1:
Bhupathi / Henman d.  Adams / Koenig  7-5, 6-3

The R2 should be a fun one!  Paes vs Bhupathi... I guess Leander has the hotter hands at the moment?

Mahesh Bhupathi thread...

Postby jayakris » Tue Mar 11, 2003 4:20 pm

Just heard from Mahesh that he will be playing with Tim Moorgiwallah this week and also at the Key Biscayne masters next week. I believe it will be back to Max Mirnyi from Monte Carlo onwards. That is a much much better partner, of course.. I am glads that the Josh Eagle experiemnt is all done before too much time is lost.

Well Mahesh and the Moorgiwallah lost a 3 set match to Mahesh's future??? and also last years double partner Max Miryni and Roger Federer.

The scoreline was

Max Miryni BLR/Roger Federer SUI d. Mahesh Bhupathi IND/Tim (Moorgiwallah) Henman 46 63 64.

Close but no cigar. It's back to India now for the Davis Cup I would assume. :)

Mahesh Bhupathi thread...

It is official now. I had reported earlier what he told me at the Indian Wells. I wasn't sure if that was for the whole year. Looks like it is.

Here is the article from the Telegraph this monday -

Bhupathi, Mirnyi set to resume partnership

BY AMITAVA DAS GUPTA

Calcutta: Mahesh Bhupathi has convinced Max Mirnyi to relaunch their profitable old firm. The Indo-Belarussian duo will be back in harness from the Monte Carlo Masters Series meet, in two weeks’ time.

The two had split after a red-hot 2002 season as Mirnyi was keen on focussing more on his singles career. Besides winning two titles last year including the US Open, Bhupathi and Mirnyi made four finals as well.

“Despite splitting with Mahesh to concentrate on singles, Max continued playing doubles this year. Mahesh made that point and prevailed upon Max to resume their partnership,” Enrico Piperno informed The Telegraph.

From April, though, Bhupathi and Mirnyi will only be on the same side of the doubles court. “They have committed to play together all big events including the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open for the rest of the year,” said Piperno who will rejoin Bhupathi after doing his Fed Cup captain’s duties next month.

Bhupathi had to seek a change after his partnership with Australian Joshua Eagle flopped. “Both are right-court players and Joshua didn’t want to shift… Mahesh tried playing on the left court but it didn’t work out,” explained Piperno.

---------------

That last part does not make sense to me. When was Mahesh a right courts player???? .. He was always a left court player - what is Rico saying?

In the QF's
[QF] #1 M.Bhupathi/ M.Mirnyi d. Jarkko Nieminen/ Andrei Stoliarov 62 62 .
and then
[SF] M. Bhupathi/M.Mirnyi d. J.Novak/P.Pala 63 62

Wow, they are really cooking. The Mad Max team seems to have not dropped a beat and is back in the same form as last year. :bounce:

In the finals they play the winner of the match between G. Etlis-M. Rodriguez and L. Arnold-M. Hood

The semifinal just got done. The second set tiebreaker was a dandy. MB-MM were up 5-2, lost one one serve at 5-4 and it went without a minibreak for the next 17 serves till the other guys dropped one mini at 13-14 ..

Yeah! :bounce: :bounce: This is from the tourney site:

Bhupathi and Mirnyi Capture Back-to-back Titles

Third-seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi captured the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo doubles title by defeating local favorites Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(6) in the final. Monte Carlo is the Indian-Belarussian duo's third title as a team following the US Open last year and the Estoril Open last week.

It's the first time they claim a doubles title at a Tennis Masters Series event, but they have two previous final appearances, in Cincinnati and Madrid last year.

Bhupathi now holds a total of 28 doubles titles on the ATP circuit, while Mirnyi has won 16 in his career.
