Ali Hassan Fyzee

Postby PKBasu » Thu Nov 21, 2013 1:16 am

Ali Hassan Fyzee played at Wimbledon from 1910 to 1933, as did Athar-Ali Fyzee (who must have been his brother).

Ali Hassan made the men's doubles semifinal in 1923, a year in which he also made R3 in singles and R2 in MxD. He rarely played the latter event, but his best singles performance was making the PQF in 1925. Here is what he achieved at Wimbledon over that long period of time:

Wikipedia and the Davis Cup website suggests he was born in 1879, so he would have been 44 years old when he made the doubles SF at Wimbledon, and 46 when he made the singles R4 in 1925!! Perhaps that was a completely different era when older people could still compete at the highest level. (In his final year at Wimbledon, he would have been 54 years old!!).

Here is a nice entry from the Davis Cup site, of India beating Austria in the Davis Cup quarter-final in 1925:
