Karshi / Samarkand Challengers May 2017

Postby Rajiv » Thu May 04, 2017 7:26 am

3 weeks of Challenger tournaments commence next week and a sizeable Indian Contingents makes the trek to the Central Republics.
Indian Challenge is only restricted to the first two Karshi & Samarkand , the third at Shymkent is devoid of any significant Indian entires with only Vishnu and Siddarth Rawat appearing in the the qualies list.

But next week Karshi is where the Indian presence is the heaviest , where Ram , Yuki , Pragnesh & Balaji have all made it into the Main Draw and the 5th player VIshnu tries his luck in the qualies , Should be an interesting tournament this , and see how 5 of our guys perform.

Yes, the first week is the best chance for Indians to go deep. RamK will be likely to be a lower seed based on his current ranking. However as I said in RamK's thread, ideally RamK should rest one of next 2 weeks, preferably next one to be fresh for French open qualies.

In second week at Samarkand, the field gets much tougher with only RamK getting into main draw while Yuki, Prajnesh and Balaji are in alternates.

No Indian challenge in third week in Shymkent as Yuki and RamK are playing French open qualies in the same week while Prajnesh has entered a challenger in Italy in same week.

Vishnu too made it to the main draw. So, we will have 5 Indians in the main draw now which is a rare occurrence for a challenger outside India.

Go guys.

The winner of the Yuki-Prajnesh R1 match plays the 8th seeded Aldin Setkic (#221) of Bosnia in R2 (assuming the latter wins his R1 too). This 29 year old guy has played almost exclusively at Sharm al-Sheikh this year, gathering points through three titles and two runner-up finishes in Futures there. A pretty easy opponent, I would think, who has never quite made the transition to Challengers.

Wow, these are some the lowest ranked players you would expect at the challenger level. UZB must not be a country that anyone wants to go to. Good luck to the Indian players...

On Monday for the singles only Vishnu figures in the starting line up amongst the Indians and plays the second match on the Centre Court
Late in the evening Pragnesh features in a doubles encounter along with his Czech partner.

After being swamped in the first set in 20 minutes ,Vishnu put up a brief resitance in the second but was not enough and bowed out in straight sets 3-6,5-7
Always looked vulnerable against the southpaw who was holding his serve confidendtly whereas Vishnu always seem to struggle holding his own serve and getting broken at crucial times
Infact the first service game of the second set which he won after numerous dueces took him 10minutes to hold ,half the time it took him to loose the first set.

Surprised DiPu is not playing anywhere, unless I missed it? All 4 challengers offer hospitality this week.

Yuki has just broken Prajnesh to go up 4-3 in the first set.
Prajnesh saved three BPs in that game, but eventually gave into the relentless pressure. High quality tennis (as long as the ball is on Prajnesh's forehand side; he seems even more tentative on the backhand than RamK).
Yuki holds easily, 5-3.
Prajnesh holds after saving 4 break points. 5-4. (Nice gesture from Yuki in the penultimate point; at Deuce, the linesman called a first serve out, but Yuki said it was an ace by pointing to where the ball had bounced on the line).
Yuki holds comfortably to take the first set 6-4.

Prajnesh holds at 30 in the first game of the second set.
