Zeel is facing a pretty good fight by her fellow Gujrat player Eetee Maheta at the moment. Zeel won the first set 6-3 but Eetee won the second 6-3.

Rishika SUNKARA (IND) 6-4 6-0 Snehal MANE (IND)
Mihika YADAV (IND) 5-7 6-2 7-6(2) Shweta Chandra RANA (IND)
Natasha PALHA (IND) [4] 6-1 6-0 Riddhi RAMESH SHARMA (IND)

Hsin-Yuan SHIH (TPE) 6-2 6-4 Radhika YADAV (IND)
Riya BHATIA (IND) [2] 6-3 6-1 Isha BUDWAL (IND)

Nidhi gets upset by a foreign girl. Pranjala just scraped thru against an unknown fellow Indian. So, it seems she might be a bit rusty after a long layoff. So, it will be tough for her against top seed in second round.

15 year old Mahak Jain easily despatches 7th seed Sri Vaishnavi Peddi Reddy 61 63 to reach QF.

Swiss qualifier Radovcic after upsetting 6th Nidhi yesterday easily beats Rishika 60 63 to reach the QF. So, she is one foreign player remaining to look out for.

Sai Samitha beats 5th Prerna Bhambri 64 46 64 to reach QF.

Full second round results -

Fatma AL NABHANI (OMA) [1] 7-5 7-6(5) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND)
Sai Samhitha CHAMARTHI (IND) 6-4 4-6 6-4 Prerna BHAMBRI (IND) [5]
Bhuvana KALVA (IND) 6-2 6-3 Sowjanya BAVISETTI (IND) [3]
Mahak JAIN (IND) 6-1 6-3 Sri Vaishnavi PEDDI REDDY (IND) [7]
Lulu RADOVCIC (SUI) 6-0 6-3 Rishika SUNKARA (IND)
Natasha PALHA (IND) [4] 6-3 6-4 Mihika YADAV (IND)
Zeel DESAI (IND) [8] 3-6 6-0 6-0 Ramya NATARAJAN (IND)
Riya BHATIA (IND) [2] 6-2 6-3 Hsin-Yuan SHIH (TPE)

So, third seed Sowjanya also got upset by Bhuvana. Pranjala put up a decent fight against the top seed but was probably still not sharp enough to cause an upset.

The QF match-ups look interesting.

I was tempted to ask our own 15 yr old Mahak to take care of her, but I had to refrain from doing so since they can only meet in the finals :)

Both 15 year olds continue their run ahead.

QF results -

Fatma AL NABHANI (OMA) [1] 4-6 7-5 6-2 Sai Samhitha CHAMARTHI (IND)
Mahak JAIN (IND) 5-7 6-3 6-4 Bhuvana KALVA (IND)
Lulu RADOVCIC (SUI) 6-3 6-0 Natasha PALHA (IND) [4]
Zeel DESAI (IND) [8] 6-4 6-3 Riya BHATIA (IND) [2]

Zeel had beaten Lulu the last time they met in ITF junior grade 3 final in South Africa last year. Hope she repeats the result. Mahak faces a tough task against much experienced top seed Fatma.

It will interesting if the 15 year olds meet in the final. Good to see the Indian youngsters take advantage of the futures as Zeel Desai is also young and on the rise.

18-year-old Zeel Desai and 15-year-old Mahak Jain are our most exciting emerging talents of the past half year. Let's hope they meet in the final, with Zeel beating Lulu again…

Mahak is still unranked in the WTA rankings, although she has qualified into a Futures in Spain (losing in R1), and won a main draw round at a Futures in Indore. I'm not sure if this will thus qualify her for a WTA ranking (yes, only if women get points for qualifying into a Futures; the men don't).
That Mahak (who will only turn 16 in June) has already been ranked in the top-50 among the world's juniors is HUGE.
Zeel is a later bloomer, but the AO junior quarter-final this year (and consequent junior ranking of 32) is suggestive of her potential.

No, you do not get any points for qualifying into a futures level tournament in women too. Also Mahak's Indore first round win was more than a year ago. So, that does not count either.

Mahak will have to win a title this week to get into rankings.

She has just taken first set 6-3 against the top seed Fatma. :D
