Re: Australian open 2017

Yuki lost his way with the serve in the second set as the wind picked up. His serve has too many moving parts to it, in comparison with his opponent's and the newer wave of players. His seems almost old school with the torso arching back and twisting. The newer serves seem almost all about going for...

Re: 2017 Chennai Open

Unless the hard court players venture to the net to volley, the clay courters will be up to the task. They can defend, hit off both wings and serve. Maybe on slippery grass, the fast court players have a leg up, but with the present day rackets, the clay courters will not be at a considerable disadv...

Re: US open 2016, Aug 23- Sept 11.

Disappointing to see Lee lose the match, but the electric atmosphere that he brings to the occasion is never stale - the crowd tried to carry him, but the unrelenting upward sweep of the power in tennis, is leaving Martina and Lee at a lose. It seems every 5 years there is a marked increase in power...

Re: US open 2016, Aug 23- Sept 11.

SKS, Could not agree with you more - doubles is a compromise, to not having singles on the first weekend. Sania was probably the last one to play on the weekend. Lee before that, and really going back, there was a choice between Ramesh and Vijay. Prakesh showed up on the weekend once, as a baby in s...

Re: US open 2016, Aug 23- Sept 11.

Too tired to say much. It was a match for the ages. I sat just behind the service line on the fateful second serve, with a bunch of tennis playing fans from New Jersey and all of them, including myself saw it as a fault, but not by much. On match point to over rule the lines person who had their han...

Re: US open 2016, Aug 23- Sept 11.

Varma, I did not get to go today, so no amaturish jibberish from me! I'm keeping my powder dry for next week. I noticed that Saketh made no errors on the match details provided - that will take the sails out of anyone. I got to chat with him for a bit and he is just a great guy - of course we talked...

Re: US open 2016, Aug 23- Sept 11.

Prof, There ain't no one scouting no one for Saki - he is alone! Rohan showed up to cheer him on for a while, but his opponent had Jay Berger encourage him the entire match - this is one closely involved in player development and coach for the USTA. All of the top player were practicing with at leas...

Re: US open 2016, Aug 23- Sept 11.

Saki has an entourage, but no coach or physio and that is a shame. He has a languid game, smooth and effortless. It would help adding more physicality. Serve is well controlled and disguised and he uses the wide serve to great effect. The forehand has good control, especially hitting it wide. He kno...

Re: Ramkumar Ramanathan thread

Enjoyed watching the match and it is always difficult to finish of a cramping opponent, but he did it! Now if he can fix that backhand return it would do wonders. If he is going to hit a sliced return, he should at least use a Continental grip - the face was too open. Anyway a stoke in progress. The...

Not sure of Lee making the last 8 at any major. I think he lost in the 4th round to Cedric Pioline at the USO in five.

PKBasu, You hit the nail on the head! Those were the days when an Indian had the potential of given a top -10 player a run for their money. Thanks for all things Ramesh!

Re: Australian Open 2016

Rajiv, Thanks for a lucid onsite report. Being court side with an Indian player is the best sporting pleasure, that I have experienced. On a side note, if you are missing Indian food, "Flora .... " something next to the main train station near the Aussie Open has some good biriyanis and a ...

Gautam, Sorry for the belated congratulations on completing the NYC marathon in 5:13:26 - I saw you name in the NYTimes, marathon section with bib #45! Truely, a great achievement. I had a half a mind of making it into the City to see you run, but I realized, I would never recognize you in that thro...
