Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

The tune not just changed, it has turned really sad now to see that there might be more old notes accounted for, than physically available!! http://www.rediff.com/business/column/seven-note-ban-tricks-and-one-lesson/20170118.htm I am told that the network of businessmen that dominates businesses acr...

Re: Obituaries

Sad to see such an icon in India sport writing pass away at such an early age (60)! Nirmal Shekar , I always looked at the by line of any sports reports and this was one name that I looked forward and loved to read. Very eloquent, at times poetic reports. I am sure it was such a thrill for him to se...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

This is the first time that I have heard abut 15.5 trillion as the figure for high denomination notes as on Nov 8. All reports had stated 14.5 lakh crore (which I presume would come to 14.5 trillion?). Almost every report and TV programme so far had mentioned that there was no estimate of the cash ...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

On a balance sheet, you can't double count the same asset or the same liability. That is exactly what this article did!! To clarify, that 4 lakh crore number for CRR is separate and excluded from 15.44 lakh crore notes that are in circulation. Cash reserve ratio CRR is money held by banks (in cash ...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

Why do I saw avoidable and unnecessary? ALL it required was to make the 500 and 1000 rupee notes VALID in the private hospitals as well as govt. ones. We all know govt hospitals alone cannot provide the necessary services to every citizen in India. If these notes are still valid in gas stations acro...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

And for those who are being so cavalier about the deaths due to demonetization, that were avoidable & unnecessary in the first place. Please don't. I understand the idea of losing lives for a greater cause. But this is not a greater cause, it is simply a political gimmick played out on a grand s...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

Here is an interesting article from IANS (agency) in the Hindustan Times today - What black money? Govt may be in for shock after demonetisation Something seems wrong in the numbers they are showing. Did this article make a mistake and assume that RBI's CRR (cash reserves) was part of the 15.5 tril...

Re: Candidates/World Championship Tournament 2016

Game starts soon and I am cheering for Karjakin!

At least they have a tiebreaker these days. Remember when a tie would result in the current world champion retaining his crown automatically!?

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

The opposition could as well be spinning these stories (about deaths in hospitals etc.). Our media is useless at reporting facts anyway. Well pretty much everyone is spinning stories.... I agree our media is useless in reporting facts. But hear this, I can corroborate one death in a private hospita...

Re: Candidates/World Championship Tournament 2016

Tie-breaks will start on Wednesday 2 pm - we can expect up to 15 games, the last one being the famous Armageddon or Sudden-Death blitz game. Carlsen plays black first. Rapid First, the players start with a match consisting of four rapid games (25 min + 10 sec/move) - Karjakin will have the white pie...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

thanks Mugu for that link. typically you have "innocent until proven otherwise". Here, you have " guilty until proven innocent by standing in bank queues"!! You normally enforce laws in a manner that would rather let go of criminals than assign guilt / hardship to an innocent. He...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

On November 2, 2016 RBI issued a notification to ALL banks in India. https://rbi.org.in/scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Mode=0&Id=10674 4. With a view to encourage the banks in that direction, it has been decided to conduct a pilot project wherein 10% of the ATMs in the country will be calibrated ...

Re: India scraps its two largest rupee notes in shocking anti-corruption move

The basic flaw with the Demonetization move was that 500 and 1000 rupee notes are not really very large denomination notes. The largest denomination note left in India was worth slightly less than US$1.50 (and no more than US$5 even on a purchasing power parity basis), so the disruption to daily tr...
